Current Affairs is a newsletter written by Marc Mültin. This page explains what personal data I collect, why, who else handles it, and what you can ask me to do with it.

Who is responsible

I am the data controller for the personal data described here. To reach me about anything on this page — including any of the requests under Your rights — use the form at the bottom of this page, or simply reply to any newsletter email you've had from me. Both reach me directly.

What I collect, and why

• Newsletter subscription. Your email address (required), and your first and last name if you choose to give them. I use these to send you the newsletter and to know who's reading.
• Feedback and the reader survey. If you use the feedback form or the reader survey, whatever you enter there — typically your name, email address, and your message or answers — so I can read it and reply.
• Email engagement. Whether a newsletter email was opened and whether links in it were clicked. This tells me which pieces are worth writing more of.
• Technical data. Standard information your browser sends when loading the site, such as your IP address, handled by my hosting provider for delivery and security.

This site carries no advertising and no third-party analytics or tracking scripts. I don't sell or share your data, and I don't use it to build profiles beyond the engagement data described above.

Lawful basis

I send the newsletter on the basis of your consent (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(a)), which you give by subscribing and confirming your address. This list uses double opt-in: you only start receiving anything after clicking the confirmation link I email you. You can withdraw consent at any time — every email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect immediately.

Who else handles your data

• Outseta — stores the subscriber list and sends the emails on my behalf. Outseta is based in the United States, so your data is transferred outside the UK.
• Cloudflare — hosts and serves this website, and processes technical data such as IP addresses to deliver pages and protect against abuse.

Both act on my instructions as processors. Nobody else receives your data.

How long I keep it

I keep your subscriber details until you unsubscribe. After you unsubscribe, I retain the minimum record needed to make sure you aren't added back or emailed again. Feedback and survey responses are kept while they're still useful for improving the newsletter; ask me and I'll delete yours.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask me to give you a copy of your data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to how I use it, or provide it in a portable form. You can also withdraw your consent at any time — unsubscribing from the newsletter does this immediately, and no request is needed. For anything else, use the form below or reply to any newsletter email, and I'll action it.

If you think I've handled your data badly, you're entitled to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk. I'd appreciate the chance to put it right first.

Changes

If I change how any of this works, I'll update this page and the date at the top. Material changes affecting what you consented to will be flagged in the newsletter itself.
